David George: Let's start with what you're building at Scale AI.

Alex Wang: At Scale, we're building the data foundry for AI. AI progress comes from three pillars: compute, data, and algorithms. Compute is powered by companies like NVIDIA, algorithms by labs like OpenAI, and data by Scale. Our goal is to produce frontier data to fuel AI advancements and enable enterprises to use their proprietary data for AI development.

David George: How do you produce frontier data?

Alex Wang: It's a massive project involving human experts and AI models. The internet is a collaboration between humans and machines, and frontier data production will be like the internet on steroids. We need to generate data that reflects complex human reasoning and tool use, which isn't captured online.

David George: What's the state of language models today?

Alex Wang: We're closing phase two, which focused on scaling models like GPT-3 and GPT-4. The next phase will be more research-oriented with labs diverging in their approaches. Compute isn't the constraint anymore; data is. We've exhausted easily accessible data, so the next breakthroughs will come from data production.

Alex Wang: Data abundance is key. Frontier data must be complex and abundant. We need to push data complexity, capture human workflows, and use synthetic data. Data foundries are as crucial as chip foundries. We must measure models scientifically to identify gaps and improve performance.

Alex Wang: Large labs have advantages in capital and existing data, but regulatory issues, especially in Europe, can limit their use. Startups can compete by innovating in data production and application development.

Alex Wang: Model pricing has dropped dramatically, making pure model rental a mediocre business. Value lies in applications and infrastructure. Alex Wang: Enterprises have vast data, but much is irrelevant. AI could transform industries by leveraging proprietary data, especially in sectors like banking. However, enterprises struggle with data utilization, making it a race to innovate.

Alex Wang: MEI stands for Merit, Excellence, and Intelligence. We hire the best person for each role without quotas. Diversity is important, but capability is key. This approach is crucial in a competitive industry like AI.

Alex Wang: AGI would mean AI can perform 80% of digital jobs. It's not imminent but could happen in four-plus years, depending on innovation. We're seeing glimpses now, making it an exciting future.
