--:-- Shamita Basu: Hey there, it's Shamita here. You may have heard that over on our weekly interview show, Apple News In Conversation, our Think Again series is back. And this year, it's all about life's big transitions.
--:-- Shamita Basu: Last week, we talked to host of the Hidden Brain podcast, Shankar Vedantam, about what your brain is doing during times of big changes. This week, we are zeroing in on an early, often confusing transition. Stepping into early adulthood with psychotherapist Satya Doyle-Bayak.
--:-- Shamita Basu: In my early 20s, when I was still in college, I was faced with what felt like a huge, huge life decision. I'd been accepted to two different summer internships. One was in D.C., interning for a senator's office, which could pave the way to a career in politics or policy. The other was in India, working for an NGO in a rural area, which didn't have such a clear career path laid out after it, but seemed meaningful and important to experience.
--:-- Shamita Basu: Part of what made that decision so hard for me was it really felt like if I chose the wrong path, I could be making some big irreversible life mistake. It was so profound to really identify that we have two completely different parts of us that might be leading us in two completely different directions, and then try to make sense of what to do.
--:-- Shamita Basu: What do you listen to? What part of you do you really trust?
--:-- Shamita Basu: Satya Doyle-Bayak is a psychotherapist who works with people trying to figure out their early adulthood. She's even written a book and newsletter dedicated to this particular developmental stage, which she calls quarter life. She says decisions like the one I was facing in college are so typical in this phase of life. And she has advice on how to think through them.
--:-- Shamita Basu: It's not just about picking the right single path. It's about honoring that there is a push and pull and a tug inside of us. We need to find that middle way and find our way to ourselves.
--:-- Shamita Basu: My interview with Satya is out now. If you missed our first Think Again episode with Shankar Vedantam, I highly recommend going back and giving it a listen. Follow Apple News in Conversation in Apple Podcasts to make sure you don't miss an episode.
