--:-- Host John Bickley: I'm Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley, and I'm here with Georgia Howe. It's Tuesday, January 16th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- Host Georgia Howe: Thanks for having me, John.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Republican presidential candidates hit the campaign trail in New Hampshire one day after the Iowa caucus. Daily Wire senior editor Cabot Phillips has more.
--:-- [Sound effects: News theme music transitions to a news report sound]
--:-- Host Cabot Phillips: As the final votes were counted, Donald Trump ended up winning 98 of Iowa's 99 counties and broke the all-important 50 percent threshold. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis outperformed recent polling but still came in a distant second, pulling in 21 percent of the vote while Nikki Haley wound up in third with 19 percent. The night also saw two candidates drop out of the race, with Vivek Ramaswamy and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson calling it quits after fourth and fifth place finishes. The New Hampshire primary will take place next Tuesday.
--:-- Host John Bickley: A day after his big Iowa caucus win, Trump is in a New York courtroom for the damages trial in his defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll. It's believed this is the first time Trump and Carroll have actually been in the same room in 25 years. The judge has already ruled that Trump is liable for defaming Carroll. The purpose of this trial is to decide how much he has to pay in damages.
--:-- Host Georgia Howe: The Department of Homeland Security has attempted to blame the state of Texas for preventing the rescue of three migrants who drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande. But the claim has since been refuted by the Justice Department. Over the weekend, a DHS spokesman claimed that Texas officials prevented Border Patrol from entering the Eagle Pass Park to respond to the incident. However, the administration's own Justice Department has now refuted the claim. The DOJ says that Border Patrol did not inform Texas officials of the drowning until over an hour after it already occurred.
--:-- Host John Bickley: The allegation came just days after the Texas National Guard took control of Shelby Park, which is a major thoroughfare for illegal immigrants, and refused to let Border Patrol enter the area.
--:-- Host Georgia Howe: The man charged with killing three sex workers in Gilgo Beach, New York, has been charged with a fourth murder. That's according to court documents unsealed today. The charges are in connection to the death of 25-year-old Maureen Brainerd Barnes. Police say her remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach. The man behind the earlier murders has been considered the prime suspect in the Brainerd Barnes death.
--:-- Host John Bickley: The defendant is charged with murder in the second degree, not murder in the first degree, because for murder in the first degree, you have to commit three murders within a 24-month period, and the numbers just don't work out. This indictment marks a change in the investigation. The grand jury investigation of the so-called Gilgo Four is over.
--:-- Host Georgia Howe: U.S. Central Command confirmed today that Navy forces seized a sailing ship on January 11th that was transporting military aid from Iran intended to resupply the Houthi forces in Yemen. Navy SEALs executed a complex boarding of the ship near the coast of Somalia, Central Command said. The team seized Iranian-made weapons that are the types used by the Houthis to attack merchant ships in the Red Sea. The incident appears to be yet more evidence of Iranian involvement in the escalating situation.
--:-- Host John Bickley: The Supreme Court has passed on the chance to rule in the debate over bathroom use for trans-identifying students after rejecting an appeal from an Indiana public school district. Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestigiacomo has more.
--:-- Host Amanda Prestigiacomo: This comes as lower appeals courts remain divided on whether it violates the Constitution for schools to enforce which bathrooms students who identify as the opposite sex can use. In this recent case that SCOTUS rejected, a Chicago-based circuit court of appeals upheld a ruling allowing girls who identify as boys to use the boys' restroom. That appeal came from the Martinsville School District. An appeals court in Richmond Virginia has also ruled in favor of opposite bathroom access.
--:-- Host John Bickley: In her opinion for the Seventh Circuit Judge Diane Wood in Chicago wrote that the high court involvement seems inevitable.
--:-- Host Georgia Howe: Less than a week after his exit from the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick spoke with the Atlanta Falcons about their vacant head coach position. The Falcons announced last night that they had spoken to Belichick, who left New England after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl championships as head coach. The Falcons are seeking to fill the position after firing Arthur Smith.
--:-- Host John Bickley: And three shows dominated the Emmy Awards on Monday night. Daily Wire culture reporter Megan Basham breaks down who won what.
--:-- Host Megan Basham: Succession, The Bear, and Beef took home 17 awards. Succession won the Best Drama Series Award, Best Director, and three Best Acting Awards. The Bear won for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Director. And Beef took home the same awards in the Limited Series category. Actress Jennifer Coolidge won a Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in White Lotus. And Better Call Saul ended its six seasons without ever winning an award. The show held a record 53 nominations and zero wins. The Emmy Awards are usually held in September, but were delayed until January due to the Hollywood strikes.
