--:-- Georgia Howe: I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley. It's Friday, November 11th. Happy Veterans Day. And this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- John Bickley: A federal judge in Texas ruled Thursday evening that President Biden's student loan bailout is illegal. In this country, we are not ruled by an all-powerful executive with a pen and a phone, Judge Mark Pittman wrote in his order. Instead, we are ruled by a constitution that provides for three distinct and independent branches of government.
--:-- Georgia Howe: President Biden is set to meet with China's Xi Jinping for the first time of his presidency. The two leaders will meet on Monday on the sidelines of next week's Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. The face-to-face meeting comes as relations between the U.S. and China grow increasingly strained and weeks after Xi was awarded an untraditional third five-year term as leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
--:-- John Bickley: President Biden has made it a priority to keep lines of communication open with President Xi to responsibly manage the competition between our two countries and he believes there is no more important channel than that between the leaders of the United States and China.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The meeting between President Biden and President Xi will be an in-depth and substantive opportunity to better understand one another's priorities and intentions.
--:-- John Bickley: In a post-election address, President Biden claims Democrats had a strong night during the election and that he plans to change nothing about his approach, despite the likelihood of having a divided Congress.
--:-- Georgia Howe: I'm prepared to work with my Republican colleagues. The American people have made clear, I think, that they expect Republicans to be prepared to work with me as well.
--:-- John Bickley: He also brushed off concerns that Republicans, who are on track to take control of the House, will investigate his administration and family.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The German government on Wednesday blocked the sale of a chip factory to a Swedish subsidiary of a Chinese company. The decision comes as Berlin grapples with taking a tougher approach toward Beijing.
--:-- John Bickley: As many as 40 Ukrainian civilians and well over 100 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded so far in the war. According to Army General Mark Milley Russia announced retreat from Kherson a regional capital in southern Ukraine that it seized early in the war, and a potential stalemate in fighting over the winter, could provide both countries an opportunity to negotiate peace.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The IRS and the Treasury Department on Thursday urged the Supreme Court against blocking a lower court ruling requiring the agencies to turn over years of former President Trump's federal tax returns to Congress.
--:-- John Bickley: Italian authorities have announced the discovery of 2,000-year-old bronze statues in an ancient Tuscan thermal spring. The items include human-like figures of gods and 5,000 gold, silver, and bronze coins. They were perfectly preserved by mud and are considered so significant that the Italian ministry announced the creation of a museum in the area which will be dedicated to these newly discovered objects.
--:-- Georgia Howe: I'm seriously excited about seeing this.
--:-- John Bickley: In other art-related news, Christie's held an auction of 60 art masterpieces this week, which sold for a record million. The pieces included works by Van Gogh Cezanne and Surratt and all belonged to the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The former Yale soccer coach who cooperated with authorities in the college admissions bribery scandal has been sentenced to five months in prison. Rudy Meredith pleaded guilty in March 2019 of wire fraud for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in return for helping students gain admission to the Ivy League college.
--:-- John Bickley: Meredith helped lead the FBI to Rick Singer, who masterminded the scheme.
