--:-- Host John Bickley: Newly released documents show the number of illegal gotaways at the border has exploded on President Biden's watch. All while immigration and border security remain top concerns for U.S. voters. I mean, the number of gotaways is up almost 400 percent. And who knows who they are?
--:-- Host John Bickley: I'm Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley with guest host Katie Pavlich, editor at Town Hall VIP. It's May 18th, and this is a Saturday edition of Morning Wire. Another high-profile, soft-on-crime case, this time in D.C., where a teenager accused of firing dozens of shots at a car full of people has been released by a self-described woke judge.
--:-- Host John Bickley: That kid shot up the neighborhood and then calmly went back into the house. But for the grace of God, nobody died in my neighborhood that night. And it's not just the U.S. suffering a wave of mass illegal migration. The U.K. is also finding itself maxed out and spending more and more taxpayer money to handle the problem.

--:-- Host John Bickley: New data shows that so-called gotaways at the border have exploded under President Biden. More illegal immigrants have evaded border security and entered the country since Biden took office than over the previous decade. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce is here to talk about the new data and new immigration rules that the president reportedly has planned.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Hey, Tim. So how bad are these new immigration numbers? They're staggering. More migrants have entered the country while evading law enforcement since fiscal year 2020 than in all the prior decade.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Fox News got the numbers through an open records request to the Department of Homeland Security. The records show that from fiscal year 2010 through fiscal year 2020, Border Patrol tallied more than 1.4 million gotaways. The annual numbers range from between a low of 86,000 in 2011 to nearly 172,000 in 2013.
--:-- Tim Pierce: In fiscal year 2021, when Biden's term started, the numbers jumped significantly. Authorities counted 387,000 gotaways that year, 606,000 the next, and finally 671,000 in fiscal year 2023 Altogether roughly 1 million illegal immigrants entered the country and evaded apprehension in those three years versus again 1 million from 2010 through 2020.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Those are quite the eye numbers. Now recently we seen some news about migrants sledding to the country under asylum procedures. What have you seen?
--:-- Tim Pierce: Well, there's been a spate of crimes committed by migrants in the country on asylum claims. For instance, last week, police in Florida arrested 20-year-old Marvin Perez Lopez on child kidnapping and sexual assault charges.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Perez Lopez is a Guatemalan national who entered the country illegally in January. He turned himself into the Border Patrol and claimed asylum. Authorities scheduled a court hearing to process his claim for sometime in 2027 before they released him into the country on his own recognizance.
--:-- Tim Pierce: According to the arrest report, Perez Lopez lured an 11-year-old girl into his van and then assaulted her. It wasn't until the girl's mother went looking for her, saw them inside the van, and started to bang on the window that the child was set free.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Perez Lopez allegedly fled, but police later caught up with him and took him into custody. He is being held in jail in Palm Beach County without bail. Just an awful story.
--:-- Tim Pierce: So President Biden is reportedly planning some reforms to these asylum processes, but would these changes have prevented this and other crimes in some way? Depends. If Perez Lopez had a criminal history and if Border Patrol agents were able to access that criminal history, then maybe he's not allowed into the country.
--:-- Tim Pierce: But if an asylum applicant doesn't have a recorded criminal history, or if it's made up of minor crimes, or if he came from a country that doesn't share criminal data, then there's a good chance the applicant will be allowed into the U.S. anyway.
--:-- Tim Pierce: So what would these reforms do or maybe not do? So federal law bars anyone who could pose a national security or public safety risk from asylum. This is supposed to be worked out through the asylum application process, but as it's currently structured, an applicant's criminal history isn't scrutinized until late in the process.
--:-- Tim Pierce: The president's reported reforms would allow that step to happen much earlier in the process and ideally block ineligible applicants before they're released into the country. But it's important to know that these reforms only target applicants who have committed serious crimes or are potential terrorists.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Others would still likely be released and could be in the U.S. for years before their asylum claims are heard in court because of the system's massive backlog. So it sounds like the Biden administration has a lot of work to do with asylum reform.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Tim, thanks for reporting. Good to be on.

--:-- Host John Bickley: A teenager accused of firing dozens of shots at a car full of people in Washington, D.C. has been released on bail by a self-styled woke judge. The alarming case has gained national attention amid a series of violent incidents involving criminals let out on the street by soft on crime officials.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Judge Lloyd Nolan Jr., a magistrate judge who sits on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, released 18-year-old Amante Moody ahead of his trial even after admitting the teen's alleged actions could have killed someone.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Here to discuss the case is Daily Wire senior editor Ash Short. Hey Ash, so first, what is Moody accused of doing?
--:-- Ash Short: Moody allegedly fired more than two dozen shots from an AR-15 at a car full of people on a busy Street in D.C. on April 22nd. Surveillance footage allegedly shows him firing the gun, and he's been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, among other charges.
--:-- Ash Short: So extremely serious charges. How did he get released?
--:-- Ash Short: So the judge overseeing his bail hearing, Lloyd Nolan Jr., is a progressive activist who has donated to a foundation created using George Soros' Open Society funds.
--:-- Ash Short: And while Nolan's Facebook account is now private it did show him posting about progressive activism including support for Black Lives Matter and calling himself woke He also donated to Gideon Promise an organization founded in 2007 on behalf of a professor through a fellowship from Soros Open Society Foundation
--:-- Ash Short: The organization claims on its website that its mission is to, quote, transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.
--:-- Ash Short: So the judge is an admitted activist. How did he justify releasing Moody, though?
--:-- Ash Short: It's difficult to say. Judge Nolan admitted that Moody's actions could have killed someone and agreed that there was enough evidence to send the case to trial.
--:-- Ash Short: Now, Moody's public defender asked for her client to be released with GPS monitoring and insisted that Moody had a supportive family that would look out for him until his trial.
--:-- Ash Short: Prosecutors argued that this supposedly supportive environment existed before Moody allegedly fired his weapon, And Nolan seemed to agree.
--:-- Ash Short: The judge even said, quote, for something to escalate to the point where you feel you need to go into the middle of the street and let off 26 shots, I don't know what set of circumstances short of incarceration I can find, end quote.
--:-- Ash Short: And yet he still released the team. Right. Judge Nolan actually seemed to be leaning toward incarceration, but Moody's public defender rejected that argument eight separate times and kept talking about how Moody didn't have a prior record and that his personality had changed when his grandfather died.
--:-- Ash Short: She also claimed that after two weeks already in jail, Moody didn't want to end up there again, a sort of scared straight argument. Eventually, her arguments worked and Nolan gave in.
--:-- Ash Short: Now, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia has already filed an emergency order to try to overturn Nolan's decision.
--:-- Ash Short: Now, as we mentioned at the top, this is not the only case like this where a progressive jurist, in this case a judge, in fact, when supported by Soros, has been extremely lenient despite serious charges, correct?
--:-- Ash Short: Right. This has become a very clear trend ranging from coast to coast. San Francisco's DA Chesa Boudin was removed by recall in 2022 over the same soft on crime pattern.
--:-- Ash Short: And Philly's DA Larry Krasner has also come under heavy fire, including in recent weeks by members of Congress who point to his policies as leading to the death of police officers.
--:-- Ash Short: Here's Republican Representative Jim Jordan during a committee hearing earlier this month. When you don't prosecute bad guys, you shouldn't be surprised that you get more crime.
--:-- Ash Short: So these local officials like Judge Nolan are starting to get more federal attention. Meanwhile, we'll see where this case in D.C. goes from here.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Ash, thanks for reporting. You're welcome.

--:-- Host John Bickley: New research has revealed that illegal immigration costs the U.K. taxpayer 14 billion pounds per year. That's more than 17 billion dollars.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Here to shed light on the significance of that figure is Sarah Elliott, Senior Advisor to the Legatum Institute. Hey, Sarah. So what exactly has been revealed here and where is it coming from?
--:-- Sarah Elliott: Hi, John. So, yes, this data was recently revealed by Dame Andrea Jenkins, the Deputy Chairwoman of the European Research Group, who also served as a minister under former Prime Minister Liz Truss.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: She conducted a deep dive on the cost of illegal immigration and came away with some really stunning conclusions. Each illegal immigrant costs the UK £12,000 per year in public services, which totals around £14.4 billion for the estimated 1.2 million illegals living in the UK.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: So for our American audience, that's something like $15,000 per migrant. And this billion that includes only illegal immigrants not legal migrants right That correct
--:-- Sarah Elliott: These figures do not reflect any costs incurred by taxpayers for mass legal migration, which has soared in the UK. In fact, it recently hit a record in 2022 of 745,000, and that is just net migration.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: So more people have arrived in the UK than that. It has also been revealed that the UK is spending 8 million pounds per day on housing migrants who cross the channel from France illegally. 8 million pounds per day.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: Has the government taken steps to address this influx and cut any of these costs?
--:-- Sarah Elliott: Well, the UK Home Office, who is responsible for border control, it has projected to spend 482 million pounds on immigration enforcement in 2024.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: This is in addition to the recent Rwanda plan where the government will be sending illegal asylum seekers to Rwanda as part of an agreement with the country.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: The project is designed to effectively scare people off arriving illegally into the UK with the threat of being moved to somewhere completely different. 370 million pounds has been earmarked as part of the scheme with each person sent to Rwanda costing at least 150,000 pounds for housing.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: The UK government will also pay France £478 million to step up their work against human smugglers.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: All right, so you say this Rwanda bill is designed to deter illegal immigration. Has it had any impact? Is it actually working?
--:-- Sarah Elliott: The stats can only speak for themselves. This policy was designed to deter the small boat landings in the UK, but the evidence is to the contrary. They appear to be growing.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: We saw a 35% increase over the same period last year. when 6,415 illegals arrived by boat. Worryingly, the UK may be throwing more money away with these schemes rather than solving the problem or addressing the cost.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: That's what appears to be failing so far. Are there other solutions on the table?
--:-- Sarah Elliott: Well, yes. Interestingly, Dame Andrea Jenkins voted against the Rwanda bill. She thought it did not go far enough and worried it would not be worth the cost of the outcomes.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: Instead, she has proposed as the only viable way to reduce illegal immigration for the UK to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights, removing the authority of the Strasbourg Court to intervene on migrant withdrawal in the UK.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: At that stage, the UK could theoretically increase the speed and severity at which it removes illegal migrants. Dame Andrea has also called for increased surveillance of coastlines and halting all payments to France until they step up their actions against the channel crossing boats.
--:-- Sarah Elliott: An interesting point given the French Navy has been accused of actively helping the migrants reach UK waters, and Paris has refused to take back migrants who originated on their shores.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Sounds like there's still lots of work to do for those who want to stem the tide there.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Meanwhile, here in the US, dealing with the illegal immigration issue has become one of the top priorities for voters.
--:-- Host John Bickley: Sarah, thanks for joining us. Thank you for having me.
--:-- [Theme music fades in]
--:-- Host John Bickley: That was Sarah Elliott, senior advisor to the Legatum Institute. All right, thank you for listening this morning.
