--:-- Georgia Howe: I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley. It's Wednesday, April 5th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- John Bickley: That's right, Georgia. Let's get to the news.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The creator of Cash App, a mobile payment service, was stabbed to death in San Francisco yesterday morning. According to police, 43-year-old tech mogul Bob Lee was attacked in the city's downtown Rincon Hill neighborhood around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. No arrests have yet been made.
--:-- John Bickley: [pauses] Elon Musk took to Twitter to condemn San Francisco for its ongoing spree of violent crime. He also asked San Francisco's district attorney if the city was taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat offenders.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Missouri officials are reporting that multiple people are dead or injured after a tornado swept through Bollinger County, 50 miles south of St. Louis, early Wednesday morning.
--:-- John Bickley: [speaking with Sergeant Clark Parrott of the Missouri State Highway Patrol] Sergeant Parrott, can you tell us more about the situation on the ground?
--:-- Sergeant Clark Parrott: We knew it was going to be bad just based on what we saw at roadside, but just seeing aerial footage of it is just heartbreaking to try to absorb it. Even though we see tornado damage, you know, it seems like every day. But this is, you know, I mean, when it hits your area, it's just a little bit different.
--:-- John Bickley: [to Georgia] Georgia, let's move on to some other news.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with the president of Taiwan today in Southern California despite warnings from China, which called the meeting a provocation. A bipartisan group of lawmakers attended the meeting. The event was a show of support for the independent island and the first time the leader of Taiwan met with a House speaker on U.S. soil.
--:-- John Bickley: [pauses] And in other news, liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Judge Janet Protosawicz soundly defeated conservative-backed candidate Dan Kelly on Tuesday in a race that was crucial for the ideological balance of the court.
--:-- Georgia Howe: [speaking with Daily Wire reporter Amanda Prestigiacomo] Amanda, can you tell us more about the outcome of the election?
--:-- Amanda Prestigiacomo: Protosawicz earned about 55.5% of the vote to Kelly's 44.5%. Protosawicz racked up huge margins in urban areas like Milwaukee and Madison, while Kelly was unable to get the turnout he needed in more rural areas.
--:-- John Bickley: [to Georgia] Georgia, let's move on to some other news.
--:-- Georgia Howe: In Chicago, Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson was elected on Tuesday as the city's next mayor. He defeated moderate rival Paul Vallis, a former Chicago Public Schools CEO. Johnson will succeed Lori Lightfoot, the first incumbent Chicago mayor to lose re-election in decades.
--:-- John Bickley: [pauses] And in North Carolina, State Representative Trisha Cottom has switched political parties, joining the Republican Party and giving the GOP a veto-proof majority in the state legislature.
--:-- Trisha Cottom: [speaking as a guest] The modern-day Democratic Party has become unrecognizable to me and to so many others throughout this state and this country. The party wants to villainize anyone who has free thought, free judgment, has solutions. If you don't do exactly what the Democrats want you to do, they will try to bully you. They will try to cast you aside.
