--:-- John Bickley: Trump's big, beautiful bill takes a big step forward. The U.S. signs a historic deal with Panama regarding the canal, and a voter ID law heads to the Senate after passing the House. I'm Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe. It's Thursday, April 10th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- John Bickley: President Trump got a big win today related to what he's branded the big, beautiful budget plan bill. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has the latest.
--:-- Tim Pierce: The GOP-led House passed a budget plan on Thursday morning that lays the groundwork for Trump's domestic priorities while overcoming resistance from a group of conservatives who want deeper spending cuts. The amended resolution was already cleared by the Senate and provides a blueprint for lawmakers to use the budget reconciliation process the Kraft legislation.
--:-- Tim Pierce: In the end, 216 Republicans and no Democrats voted in favor of the measure, with two Republicans voting against it. President Trump celebrated the vote on Truth Social, writing that the resolution sets the stage for one of the greatest and most important signings in the history of our country. He said it will be the largest tax and regulation cuts ever even contemplated.
--:-- John Bickley: The EU has followed Trump's lead and paused tariffs against the U.S. Daily Wire senior editor Cabot Phillips has the latest.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today the bloc will hold off for 90 days on countermeasures that would have targeted over $23 billion worth of American goods, ranging from motorcycles to agricultural products. Trump's tariff rollback came after markets tumbled globally, triggering the sharpest volatility since the early days of COVID.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: His reversal brought some relief Wednesday with record gains, but the EU says its response is only delayed, not completely scrapped. Trump paused nearly all of his tariffs while upping levies on Chinese goods to 125%. Earlier this week, von der Leyen said the EU was ready to negotiate with the US. We have offered zero for zero tariffs for industrial goods, as we have successfully done with many other trading partners, because Europe is always ready for a good deal.
--:-- John Bickley: Doge says it's uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars in fraudulent unemployment claims, including payouts to people not yet born. The agency says it has identified nearly 10,000 individuals with birth dates up to 15 years in the future who have collected $69 million.
--:-- John Bickley: They've also found people over the age of 115 receiving a total of $59 million. In one case, a claim was filed under the birth year of 2154. Elon Musk called the findings insane and said the fraud highlights a lack of basic identity checks.
--:-- John Bickley: The man found hiding at Donald Trump's golf course will be charged with attempted first-degree murder. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeyer announced today that Ryan Ruth will also be charged with terrorism for allegedly trying to assassinate Trump last September.
--:-- James Uthmeyer: The Florida AG says the Biden administration obstructed the investigation delaying charges for over 200 days. Trump was unharmed after a Secret Service agent spotted the armed suspect hiding near the course.
--:-- James Uthmeyer: Attempting to take the life of a former president and a leading presidential candidate isn't just an attack on one man. This was a political attack against our Republican form of government and our shared American values. We cannot allow justice to be delayed or denied.
--:-- John Bickley: And thanks to the president, our U.S. Attorney General, and the FBI director, we are moving forward in our pursuit.
--:-- John Bickley: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made a deal to safeguard the Panama Canal. Daily Wire White House correspondent Mary Margaret Olihan traveled to Panama with the secretary for the historic meeting.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Hegseth announced a new U.S.-Panama partnership to safeguard the Panama Canal from what officials call malign Chinese influence following high-level meetings with Panamanian President Jose Raul Molino.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: The deal includes a memorandum of understanding and a joint declaration that allows U.S. naval vessels priority passage, and it boosts bilateral cooperation on cyber defense, intelligence sharing, and joint military training.
--:-- John Bickley: Hegseth called the trip historic, crediting renewed trust under President Trump's leadership as key to securing the agreement.
--:-- Pete Hegseth: We had a very successful trip there. President, President Molino, sends his regards very complimentary of the U.S. He a great ally and I think they want the communist Chinese out and with our troops they partnering with their forces we got a chance to push them all the way out.
--:-- John Bickley: Defense officials emphasized the strategic urgency of countering China's regional ambitions and pledged continued U.S. engagement in Panama.
--:-- John Bickley: A once key artery for illegal immigrants seeking U.S. asylum is now virtually unused. Daily Wire reporter Spencer Lindquist has the details.
--:-- Spencer Lindquist: The Darien Gap in Panama has long been a big indicator of the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S. Before and after photos of parts of the region show areas once filled with tents and families now stand deserted.
--:-- Spencer Lindquist: Images show that only a handful of migrants remain, and they're being watched closely by police. The change follows the Trump administration's intensified crackdown on illegal immigration, paired with Panama's own tough stance under President Molino.
--:-- John Bickley: The once treacherous passage is now, officials say, effectively shut down.
--:-- John Bickley: And a bill requiring in-person proof of citizenship to vote has passed the House. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE, Act is backed by President Trump and aims to crack down on non-citizen voting.
--:-- John Bickley: All but five Democrats opposed it. That's despite polls showing that an overwhelming 80% of Americans support voter ID laws. The measure now heads to the Senate, where it faces a tougher path, needing 60 votes to advance.
--:-- John Bickley: Critics argue that non-citizen voting is already rare and penalized harshly. Supporters say the bill is key to protecting election integrity.
--:-- John Bickley: All right, there's your drive home updates this afternoon. To learn more about these stories, go to dailywire.com.
--:-- John Bickley: And in case you missed it this morning, we covered some key stories, including stocks soaring after the president paused most of the tariffs, the Trump administration's push for tax cuts, and China's response to the trade war.
--:-- John Bickley: Thanks for tuning in. We'll be back tomorrow morning with another full edition of Morning Wire. Bye.
