--:-- John Bickley: That's a word from our sponsors. I'm Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley with guest co-host Mary Margaret Olihan, senior reporter for The Daily Signal.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Hi, John.
--:-- John Bickley: It's Thursday, May 2nd, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- President Biden addressed the anti-Israel protests on college campuses across the nation today. The president defended peaceful protests but said order must prevail.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: The Democratic president also said that the protests have not caused him to reevaluate his approach to the war.
--:-- John Bickley: Biden said that while peaceful protest is protected under the law, violence is never permitted. Destroying property is not a peaceful protest. It's against the law.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, It's forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. None of this is a peaceful protest.
--:-- John Bickley: Threatening people intimidating people instilling fear in people is not peaceful protest. It's against the law.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Police broke up an anti-Israel encampment at UCLA this morning, arresting dozens of individuals.
--:-- John Bickley: This happened at around three this morning. Police broke through the lines of the encampment, clearing out boards, pallets and metal barriers after using flashbangs.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Here's what that sounded like.
--:-- John Bickley: Protesters were previously told to leave by campus authorities after days of camping out to protest Israel's war with Hamas.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Yesterday, authorities said that the encampment was unlawful even as occupiers demanded that they be provided with food and other supplies.
--:-- John Bickley: Videos posted online show police attempting to break through the lines of protesters, some of whom are wearing helmets and goggles.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: The UCLA arrests come as police have intervened at other anti-Israel encampments across the country. At Dartmouth in New Hampshire, police arrested around 90 protesters who had refused to leave the illegal campus camp they had set up.
--:-- John Bickley: Meanwhile, New York Mayor Eric Adams said that preliminary data confirms that of the protesters who participated in Columbia and CUNY demonstrations, 40% were not from the schools.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has signed a bill repealing a pro law that effectively outlawed abortion in the state.
--:-- John Bickley: The repeal may not be able to take effect for 90 days Because of that Planned Parenthood Arizona filed a motion yesterday asking the state Supreme Court to prevent a pause on abortions until the repeal takes effect.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Police shot and killed a student at a Wisconsin middle school yesterday during their response to a reported person with a gun.
--:-- John Bickley: According to Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Call, no one else was hurt in the incident, which occurred at Mount Horeb Middle School.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: During a press conference last night, the state AG declined to say what led up to the shooting.
--:-- John Bickley: We're not identifying the student at this point in time. What I can say is that it was a student, it was a minor, but as we continue to move forward with this process, we'll provide information as appropriate.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: I will also mention we'll be working in conjunction with the DA's office as information is gathered, and the details that we're able to release will be based on conversations we have with that office.
--:-- John Bickley: The school posted on its Facebook page yesterday that the school was locked down because of an active shooter.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: District officials say the shooter did not breach the entryway.
--:-- John Bickley: The school district superintendent says he believes security measures at the middle school prevented what could have been a worse tragedy.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: He also praised a few students who quickly reported that someone was approaching the school.
--:-- John Bickley: A former Nickelodeon show creator is suing the producers of the docuseries Quiet on Set, The Dark Side of Kids TV.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: Daily Wire reporter Ash Short has more.
--:-- Ash Short: Dan Schneider filed a defamation lawsuit claiming that the quiet on set series portrayal of him is a hit job.
--:-- John Bickley: Attorneys for the former television creator claim that the filmmakers behind the series falsely state or imply that Schneider sexually abused the children who worked on his television shows.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: According to the suit, the television creator, who is known for hits like Zoe 101, iCarly, and Drake and Josh, is suing quiet on set filmmakers Emma Schwartz, Mary Robertson, Warner Brothers Discovery Inc., Maxine Productions, and Sony Pictures Television Inc.
--:-- John Bickley: In a statement yesterday, Schneider said he is apologetic and regretful for his behavior back then and that he had no choice but to take legal action against the people behind the series.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: And a student who defended the American flag during a North Carolina campus protest earlier this week says the protesters would have had to yank the flag from him over his dead body.
--:-- John Bickley: This comes after anti-Israel protesters targeted the flag on the UNC Chapel Hill's quad while it was at half-staff in honor of four Charlotte officers killed in the line of duty.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: At one point, the protesters replaced it with a Palestinian flag, enraging students and inspiring members from the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity to step into action.
--:-- John Bickley: Here's Dan Stompel talking with Fox.
--:-- Mary Margaret Olihan: It's good to see people still willing to put their bodies on the line, their mind and soul on the line to protect this flag. There are still patriots in this country.
--:-- John Bickley: All right, there's your Drive Home updates this afternoon. To learn more about these stories, go to dailywire.com. And for more in-depth discussion of the biggest stories of the day, listen to our latest full episode of Pointing Wire every morning.
