--:-- Lakshmi Singh: Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: The White House is hosting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban today. NPR's Rob Schmitz reports Orban would like to broker another summit between President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
--:-- Rob Schmitz: Orban, who is close to both Trump and Putin, has proposed hosting a summit in Budapest. He also plans to discuss an exemption from U.S. sanctions against Russian energy. Hungary relies on Russian crude oil, and Orban says without it, his country's economy would be in trouble.
--:-- Rob Schmitz: Another priority for Orban is to persuade Trump to visit Hungary, as Orban faces an unprecedented challenge to his power from a new opposition leader ahead of Hungary's parliamentary elections next April.
--:-- Rob Schmitz: Orban believes a visit by Trump could energize the strongman leader's conservative base.

--:-- Lakshmi Singh: Airlines are beginning to cancel flights at major hubs across the country today.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: That's because the Federal Aviation Administration is cutting traffic at the nation's busiest 40 airports by 10 percent.
--:-- Jeremy Siegel: From Air Station GBH in Boston, I'm Jeremy Siegel. The move is intended to ease the burden on air traffic controllers who have been working without pay since the start of the government shutdown.
--:-- Jeremy Siegel: Patricia Anderweg was supposed to fly from Boston to Australia to celebrate her 90th birthday with family this week. But thanks to a series of delays and now the shutdown-induced cancellations, she missed her connecting flight.
--:-- Jeremy Siegel: Anderweg says at this point, it's not worth the trip. I'm missing my birthday, but on the other hand, I met so many helpful people right, left, and center. I call it the journey to nowhere.
--:-- Jeremy Siegel: Airlines are phasing in the 10 percent reduction in flights, so cancellations are expected to become more widespread in the days ahead.
--:-- Jeremy Siegel: For NPR News, I'm Jeremy Siegel at Logan Airport in Boston.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: It is the first Friday of the month, which normally means the release of a new government jobs report.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: But for the second month in a row, that report's been held up by the government shutdown.
--:-- Scott Horsley: Here's NPR's Scott Horsley. The last official jobs report we got was two months ago.
--:-- Scott Horsley: And as Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook told an audience at the Brookings Institution this week, a long time in a fast economy like ours, I worry about the labor market because it can turn very quickly. It can deteriorate very quickly.
--:-- Scott Horsley: That's why the Fed lowered interest rates last week in an effort to boost demand and try to prop up the job market.
--:-- Scott Horsley: That's NPR's Scott Horsley reporting.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: Economists are getting indications about the labor market's performance from other sources, such as Challenger Gray and Christmas.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: The outplacement firm put out a report saying it was the worst October for layoff announcements in more than two decades.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: The Dow is down 237 points. The Nasdaq has fallen 352 points.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: This is NPR News.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: Political candidates in several high-profile races this week supercharged their online ad campaigns to reach young voters.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: But NPR's Anusha Mather reports that in-person contact may have made the difference in New York City.
--:-- Anusha Mather: Zoran Mamdani spent the weekend before the election riding the subway and cheering on marathon runners.
--:-- Anusha Mather: According to his campaign, he had over 60 volunteers knocking on doors.
--:-- Anusha Mather: Ruby Bell Booth is an analyst at the research organization Circle. She said this grassroots campaign was crucial to support among young voters.
--:-- Anusha Mather: There's an assumption that they're just all on their phones all the time. But we actually find that the most important resource for young people when thinking about politics is their friends and peers.
--:-- Anusha Mather: Booth says Mamdani's support among young voters sends a message to other candidates. To get young people to the polls, a savvy social media campaign is important, but ultimately no substitute for face-to-face connection.

--:-- Lakshmi Singh: The 2026 Grammy nominations are out.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: One of the most coveted awards on the music industry's biggest night is Album of the Year.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: The category's nominees leading featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, and others are Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, Clips Pusha T Malice, Tyler, the creator.
--:-- Lakshmi Singh: Forgot to feature Sabrina Carpenter's work, as well as Lady Gaga.
