--:-- Noel King: I'm Noelle King, and I'm here with Timothy Snyder, a historian at Yale University.
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Thanks for having me on the show.
--:-- Noel King: So, let's start with the basics. Putin says Ukraine isn't a country. He's wrong. But what's his argument?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Well, Putin's argument is that Ukraine was created by the Soviet Union, specifically by Vladimir Lenin.
--:-- Noel King: But that's not entirely accurate, is it?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: No, it's not. The Soviet Union was created as a federation of national units, precisely because the communists understood that the Ukrainian question was real.
--:-- Noel King: And what does that mean?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: It means that Ukraine was already a distinct nation with its own history, culture, and language.
--:-- Noel King: And how does that relate to the famine in Ukraine in the 1930s?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Ah, yes. The famine was a result of Stalin's policies, specifically collectivization, which led to the confiscation of grain from Ukrainian peasants.
--:-- Noel King: And how many people died in that famine?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Estimates suggest around 3.9 million people died who didn't need to die.
--:-- Noel King: That's a staggering number. And how did that affect Ukrainian society?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: It had a profound impact. People lost their ability to behave politically, and the famine became an unforgettable episode in Ukrainian history.
--:-- Noel King: And how does that relate to the present day?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Well, the famine is still remembered today, and it's one of the things that marks Ukrainians off from Russians.
--:-- Noel King: And what about the Soviet Union's treatment of Ukraine after World War II?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: After the war, Ukraine was praised by Stalin, but when the Germans occupied Ukraine, Stalin turned against Ukraine, accusing them of being collaborators.
--:-- Noel King: And how did that affect Ukrainian identity?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: It led to a kind of Russification in Ukraine, where Ukrainian culture was suppressed, and people were forced to speak Russian.
--:-- Noel King: And how did that change after the Soviet Union collapsed?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: After the collapse, Ukraine began to build its own identity, with its own language, culture, and history.
--:-- Noel King: And how does that relate to the current conflict with Russia?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Well, Putin's actions are a direct result of his desire to suppress Ukrainian identity and assert Russian dominance.
--:-- Noel King: And what do you expect to see in the coming weeks?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: I'm probably better on the coming years than the coming weeks. But I think we'll see a continuation of the conflict, with both sides digging in.
--:-- Noel King: And what about the Ukrainian people? How are they responding to this conflict?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: They're staying calm, but they're ready to fight. They know that Ukraine is a normal country, and they'll defend it.
--:-- Noel King: And finally, what's the significance of the Maidan protests in 2014?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: The Maidan protests were a turning point in Ukrainian history, marking the beginning of Ukraine's struggle for independence and self-determination.
--:-- Noel King: And how does that relate to the current conflict?
--:-- Timothy Snyder: The Maidan protests showed that Ukrainians are willing to fight for their freedom and their identity.
--:-- Noel King: Thank you, Timothy Snyder, for joining us today.
--:-- Timothy Snyder: Thanks for having me.
