--:-- John Bickley: I'm Daily Wire editor-in-chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe. It's Thursday, October 26th, and this is your Morning Wire afternoon update.
--:-- Georgia Howe: 18 people are dead and 13 others are injured after one man went on a shooting spree last night in Lewiston, Maine.
--:-- John Bickley: Maine Governor Janet Mills addressed the tragedy today as the prime suspect remains at large.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The full weight of my administration is behind law enforcement's efforts to capture the person of interest, Robert Carr, to hold whoever is responsible for this atrocity accountable and to seek full justice for the victims and their families.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: Mainstay police say they've issued an arrest warrant for 40-year-old Robert Carr from the nearby community of Bowdoin. We typically do not name mass shooting suspects due to company policy, unless the suspect is at large and doing so may help law enforcement apprehend the suspect.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: The warrant charges Carr with eight counts of murder, a number that law enforcement officials say is almost certain to rise.
--:-- Colonel William Ross: The reason it's eight counts because 10 people have not yet been identified. As those people are identified, the counts will probably go to the total of 18.
--:-- Colonel William Ross: He should be considered armed and dangerous. Based on our investigation, we believe this is someone that should not be approached.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: The suspect had previously been labeled a person of interest in the shootings which happened last night at a bowling alley and a restaurant about four miles away.
--:-- Cabot Phillips: Police say that seven people were killed inside the bowling alley eight people were killed at a restaurant, and three more victims died at a local hospital for a total of 18.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Israeli troops and tanks entered Gaza overnight for a short time and hit several targets as a larger ground invasion looms.
--:-- Georgia Howe: According to the Associated Press, the conflict is already the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry claimed today that over 7,000 Palestinians have died thus far, though it's important to note that figures given by Hamas officials cannot be independently verified.
--:-- Georgia Howe: According to Israeli officials, the number of remaining hostages in Gaza now stands at 222. That includes foreigners captured by Hamas during the October 7th attack.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Four hostages have been released so far.
--:-- Georgia Howe: U.S. officials fear the fighting could spill over into a wider regional conflict.
--:-- Georgia Howe: More than two dozen people are said to be dead and at least four are missing after Hurricane Otis battered Acapulco, Mexico, as a Category 5 storm early Wednesday morning.
--:-- Georgia Howe: That's according to Acapulco's mayor, who briefed the public in a news conference earlier this morning.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Acapulco's general hospital also saw severe damage from the storm, forcing around 200 patients to be transferred to other medical facilities.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The storm brought heavy rain and windy conditions that the city hadn't seen in decades. Landslides and floods followed as one of the main rivers in Acapulco overflowed.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The United Auto Workers Union and Ford have come to terms on a tentative agreement that could bring to an end a nearly six-week strike.
--:-- Georgia Howe: According to those with knowledge of the discussions, the agreement still needs to be approved by UAW members, thousands of whom have walked off the jobs at factories throughout the U.S.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Both Ford and the union took part in negotiations earlier this week, making attempts to finalize the deal.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The negotiations involved a proposed increase to workers' wages of at least 25 percent, as well as other benefit improvements.
--:-- Sean Fain: Everything we did at the bargaining table, every extra hundred million we got the company to give up was because of you, the members.
--:-- Sean Fain: And the next steps are also up to you because the members are the highest authority in our union.
--:-- Sean Fain: We send this contract to you because we know it breaks records. We know it will change lives. But what happens next is up to you all.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Democratic Congressman Jamal Bowman of New York pled guilty today to falsely pulling a fire alarm, which he did in a House office building on Capitol Hill last month.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Bowman's plea is part of a deferred prosecution agreement.
--:-- Tim Pierce: The deal requires Bowman to pay a fine and write an apology letter to the U.S. Capitol Police chief.
--:-- Tim Pierce: In return, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss the charges as long as he doesn't break any other laws during a three-probationary period.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Bowman will return to court this coming January to confirm his compliance and officially dismiss the charges against him.
--:-- Tim Pierce: Bowman set off the fire alarm on September 30th in the Cannon House office building as lawmakers were about to vote on a spending measure to prevent a shutdown.
--:-- Georgia Howe: The U.S. economy surged more than expected in its third quarter.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Gross domestic product, which measures U.S.-produced goods and services, rose at a 4.9 percent annualized pace from July to September.
--:-- Georgia Howe: According to the Commerce Department, that's up from 2.1 percent in the second quarter.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Consumer spending, increased inventories, residential investment, and government spending all contributed to the unexpected rise.
--:-- Georgia Howe: Economists say the rise will not affect the Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates steady at its meeting next week.
--:-- Georgia Howe: When we look at some of the underlying data in the Q3 report, the resilience of businesses, the resilience of the consumer, but broadly speaking, the labor market is still extremely tight.
--:-- Georgia Howe: So the Fed is looking at all of these data juxtaposed with inflation that's still too high.
--:-- Georgia Howe: I think the committee is going to have a very difficult time selling a prolonged period of a pause.
