Main Topic: Geothermal Energy and its Potential to Revolutionize the World's Energy Landscape
Key Participants:
Noam Hassenfeld, host of Unexplainable from Vox
Dylan Matthews, senior correspondent on Vox's Future Perfect team
Chris Wright, current energy secretary, who has been a big investor and backer of geothermal energy
Key Points:
Geothermal energy has the potential to be a game-changer in the fight against climate change, as it produces barely any emissions and can provide constant energy.
The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a prime example of geothermal energy in action, where wastewater from a power plant is converted into steam to generate electricity.
However, extracting geothermal energy is a complex and challenging process, requiring advanced drilling technology and expertise.
The biggest barrier to widespread adoption of geothermal energy is the cost and technical difficulties of drilling deep into the earth.
Despite these challenges, there are promising developments in the field, including the use of closed-loop systems and the potential for supercritical geothermal energy.
The current energy secretary, Chris Wright, has been a big supporter of geothermal energy and has helped to secure funding for geothermal projects.
Takeaways:
Geothermal energy has the potential to be a major player in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
However, the technical and financial challenges of extracting geothermal energy must be overcome before it can become a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
The development of geothermal energy will require significant investment and innovation, including the creation of better drill bits and more efficient extraction technologies.
The current energy secretary's support for geothermal energy is a positive sign for the industry, but the success of geothermal energy will ultimately depend on the ability of companies and governments to overcome the technical and financial challenges associated with it.
Optimism:
Noam Hassenfeld is cautiously optimistic about the potential for geothermal energy to become a major player in the energy landscape.
He believes that there will be some adoption of geothermal energy, but it may not be as widespread as some people hope.
The success of geothermal energy will depend on the ability of companies and governments to overcome the technical and financial challenges associated with it.

Noam Hassenfeld: Welcome to Today Explained. I'm Noam Hassenfeld, and today we're going to explore the world of geothermal energy. It's an unlimited source of power that's been hiding beneath our feet, but it's not as easy to tap into as you might think.
--:--
[Sound effects: gentle water sounds]
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: I'm here with Dylan Matthews, a senior correspondent on Vox's Future Perfect team. Dylan, thanks for joining me.
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Thanks for having me, Noam.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: So, let's start with the basics. What is geothermal energy, and why is it so exciting?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Well, geothermal energy is heat from the Earth's core. It's a renewable source of power that's clean, constant, and abundant. And the best part is, it's already working in some parts of the world, like Iceland.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's right. Iceland is a leader in geothermal energy. But what about the rest of the world? Why isn't geothermal energy more widespread?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Ah, that's the million-dollar question. The biggest barrier is drilling deep into the Earth's crust to access the hot rocks. It's a tough technical challenge, and it's expensive.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: And what about the risks? I've heard that geothermal energy can cause earthquakes.
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Yes, that's true. There was a demonstration project in South Korea that caused a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. But most geothermal projects have not been associated with significant seismic activity.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's reassuring. But what about the closed-loop systems that some companies are developing? Can those mitigate the risks?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Yes, they can. Closed-loop systems involve placing a pipe deep into the Earth and circulating a fluid through it to generate heat. It's a more controlled process, and it reduces the risk of earthquakes.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That makes sense. But what about the drill bits? I've heard that's a major limitation.
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Ah, yes. Drill bits are a major challenge. We need better drill bits to access the hot rocks, but it's a complex problem.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: And what about the cost? Is geothermal energy competitive with other forms of energy?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Well, it's not yet. But the ultimate dream is to get to supercritical temperatures, where the rocks are over 752 degrees Fahrenheit. That's where the real potential for geothermal energy lies.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: I see. And what about the politics? Is there a chance that geothermal energy could become a major player in the energy market?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Ah, that's a tough question. The politics are complex, and it's hard to predict what will happen. But I think there's a chance that geothermal energy could become a major player if we can overcome the technical and financial challenges.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's reassuring. And finally, what about the future of geothermal energy? What does it look like if we can tap into this unlimited source of power?
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Well, if we can tap into geothermal energy, it could be a game-changer. We could have abundant, clean energy, and it could transform the way we live and work.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's a compelling vision. Thanks, Dylan, for joining me today.
--:--
Dylan Matthews: Thanks, Noam.

--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: [in a different tone] This year, geothermal has been everywhere. That geothermal is so hot right now. In the first few months of 2025, there's been almost as much geothermal investment as there was all of last year.
--:--
[Sound effects: gentle water sounds continue to play]
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: And there's also been a lot of progress on the ground, or under the ground. One company in Utah has drilled 15,000 feet down to a point where the temperature is over 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
--:--
[Sound effects: gentle water sounds continue to play]
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: So, what's behind this surge in geothermal investment? I'm joined now by Chris Wright, the energy secretary.
--:--
Chris Wright: Thanks for having me, Noam.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: So, Chris, what's driving this surge in geothermal investment?
--:--
Chris Wright: Well, I think it's a combination of factors. We've got a lot of momentum behind geothermal, and we're seeing a lot of innovation in the field.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's great to hear. And what about the politics? Is there a chance that geothermal energy could become a major player in the energy market?
--:--
Chris Wright: Ah, that's a tough question. The politics are complex, but I think there's a chance that geothermal energy could become a major player if we can overcome the technical and financial challenges.

--:--
Jalen: Thanks for having me, Noam.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: So, Jalen, what's the vision for a world with fully tapped geothermal potential?
--:--
Jalen: Well, if we can tap into geothermal energy, it could be a game-changer. We could have abundant, clean energy, and it could transform the way we live and work.
--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's a compelling vision. And what about the challenges? What are the biggest hurdles we need to overcome to get to this point?
--:--
Jalen: Ah, that's a tough question. The biggest hurdles are technical and financial. We need better drill bits, and we need to make geothermal energy more cost-competitive with other forms of energy.

--:--
Noam Hassenfeld: That's a fair assessment. And what about the challenges? What are the biggest hurdles we need to overcome to get to this point?
