--:-- Sean Rameswaram: Welcome back to Today Explained. I'm Sean Rameswaram.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: And I'm Zack Beauchamp. Today, we're talking about Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: Nikki Haley has had a rough week. On Sunday, she announced sanctions against Russia. On Monday, the White House said there would be no sanctions. Then, the president's economic advisor said Haley was simply "confused."
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's been a wild ride. And I'm here to explain what happened and why it's a big deal.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: So, let's start with the basics. What happened on Sunday?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: On Sunday, Nikki Haley announced on Face the Nation that the U.S. would be imposing sanctions on Russia. She said that the sanctions would be announced by Secretary Mnuchin on Monday.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And then on Monday, what happened?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, the White House said that there would be no sanctions. They basically walked back Nikki Haley's announcement.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And then the president's economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, said that Haley was simply "confused."
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, that's right. And that's when things got really weird. Because Nikki Haley punched back and said that she wasn't confused at all.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: So, what's going on here? Why did the White House walk back Nikki Haley's announcement?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, it's not entirely clear. But it seems like there was a miscommunication between the White House and Nikki Haley's office.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about Larry Kudlow's comment? Was that just a mistake?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: I don't think so. I think it was a deliberate attempt to undermine Nikki Haley's credibility.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And why is this a big deal?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, Nikki Haley is a key figure in the Trump administration, and her credibility is important. But beyond that, this is a big deal because it shows that the Trump administration is fundamentally broken.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: What do you mean by that?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: I mean that the Trump administration is unable to communicate effectively, and that's leading to all sorts of problems. In this case, it's leading to mixed signals and confusion about U.S. policy.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what does this mean for Nikki Haley's future in the administration?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, it's hard to say. But it's possible that this could be the end of her time in the administration. She's already been a target of the president's ire, and this could be the final straw.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about the implications for U.S. foreign policy?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, this is a big deal because it shows that the Trump administration is unable to present a united front on foreign policy. And that's a problem because it undermines the credibility of the U.S. on the world stage.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: Thanks for explaining this, Zack.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Thanks for having me.

--:-- Sean Rameswaram: Thanks again, and we'll see you next time.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, see you next time.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: You know, I'm a little curious who exactly Nikki Haley is.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, she's super interesting. She's from South Carolina, she's Indian American, and she grew up Sikh, but she converted to Methodism.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And she's been active in conservative politics for a long time.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, that's right. And before she was in the Trump administration, she was governor of South Carolina.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: That's right. And she was the first female and first Indian American governor of South Carolina.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, that's right. And she's been a prominent figure in conservative politics for a long time.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about her background? What's her story?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, she's a movement conservative, which means she believes in limited government, muscular foreign policy, and traditional social values.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And she's been a strong supporter of Donald Trump, right?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Not exactly. I think she's a never Trump type, who joined the Trump administration for expedient reasons.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about her relationship with the president? Is that a good one?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, it's complicated. I think she's been able to navigate the administration and stay in the president's good graces, but it's not clear how long that will last.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about her future in the administration? Is she in danger of being fired?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's possible. The president has a history of firing people who disagree with him, and Nikki Haley has been a thorn in his side on Russia policy.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about the implications for U.S. foreign policy? Is this a big deal?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's a big deal. Nikki Haley is a key figure in the Trump administration, and her credibility is important. But beyond that, this is a big deal because it shows that the Trump administration is fundamentally broken.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about the Russian response to her anti-Russia tirades? Is that a problem?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's a problem. The Russian response to her anti-Russia tirades is to largely treat them with contempt.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about the risk of war? Is that a possibility?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's a possibility. When you have mixed signals and confusion about U.S. policy, it can lead to all sorts of problems, including the risk of war.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what about Nikki Haley's future in politics? Is she still a viable candidate for president?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Yeah, it's hard to say. But it's possible that this could be the end of her time in the administration, and that could impact her future in politics.
--:-- Sean Rameswaram: Thanks for explaining this, Zack.
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Thanks for having me.

--:-- Sean Rameswaram: And what does that mean for her credibility?
--:-- Zack Beauchamp: Well, it means that she's not in control of her own policy, and that's a problem.
