--:-- Giles Snyder: Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. Members of the Board of Iowa's largest school district are to meet later today following the arrest by immigration agents of the superintendent. Iowa Public Radio's Isabella Liu reports.
--:-- Isabella Liu: Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop initiated by ICE agents. Roberts is from Guyana in South America but grew up in Brooklyn. ICE says he received a final removal order last year. The agency also says there were prior weapon charges and a loaded gun was found in his car.
--:-- Isabella Liu: Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris says she hasn't been able to verify new information, but praised how Roberts led the district. There is much we do not know. However, what we do know is that Dr. Roberts has been an integral part of our school community since he joined over two years ago.
--:-- Isabella Liu: Roberts led the district since 2023 as Des Moines first black superintendent. For NPR News, I'm Isabella Liu in Des Moines.
--:-- Giles Snyder: The United States says it will revoke the visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro accusing him of inciting U soldiers to disobey orders. Petro had been addressing a pro-Palestinian protest in New York. The BBC's Mimi Swaby has more.
--:-- Mimi Swaby: Gustavo Petro, Colombia's first left-wing president and a vocal opponent of Israel's war in Gaza, is in the U.S. United Nations General Assembly. During his speech on Tuesday, he hit out at President Trump, saying he was complicit in genocide in Gaza and calling for criminal proceedings over U.S. missile attacks on suspected drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean Sea.
--:-- Mimi Swaby: But tensions escalated further when Mr. Petro attended and addressed a pro-Palestinian demonstration on Friday in Manhattan. There, he urged U.S. soldiers not to obey Donald Trump's orders, but instead orders of humanity.
--:-- Giles Snyder: United Nations sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program are set to be re-imposed today after an effort by Russia and China to delay them failed in the Security Council. The sanctions were lifted a decade ago as part of the 2015 nuclear deal that the first Trump administration pulled out.
--:-- Giles Snyder: France, Germany and the UK triggered the move when they accused Iran of failing to live up to its commitments.

--:-- Scott Horsley: Revised figures show spending in April, May, and June was also stronger than initially reported. Spending on housing is still in a slump, though. Sales of existing homes fell in August, even as sales of new homes jumped.
--:-- Scott Horsley: Mortgage rates inched up this week to an average of 6.3 percent on a 30-year loan. For the week, the Dow slipped a tenth of a percent, the S&P 500 index fell a third of a percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped two-thirds of a percent.

--:-- Giles Snyder: The Transportation Department is tightening the requirements for non-citizens to get commercial driver's licenses. And as NPR's Joel Rose reports, the department says all states must comply with the new rules.
--:-- Joel Rose: The Transportation Department is announcing the new rules after fatal crashes this year in Florida, Texas, and Alabama. Officials say all three were caused by non-citizen truck drivers who should not have received commercial driver's licenses.
--:-- Joel Rose: The rules will make it impossible for many immigrants to get those licenses because only three specific classes of visa holders are eligible.
--:-- Giles Snyder: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also threatened to revoke million in federal funding from California unless it complies.
--:-- Joel Rose: A spokesperson for Governor Gavin Newsom defended the state safety record saying commercial driver's license holders from California have a fatal crash rate almost 40% below the national average.
--:-- Giles Snyder: Joel Rose, NPR News, Washington.
--:-- Giles Snyder: South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency ahead of a storm system that forecasters say could strengthen into a tropical storm by tomorrow.
